How to decide your fantasy draft order: 8 fair (and fun) ways

Every fantasy league has the same argument before the draft: who picks first? Here are eight ways to set your fantasy football draft order (they work for baseball, basketball and hockey too), from fastest to most entertaining, plus how to keep it fair.

Randomize your draft order now

1. Use a random draft order generator

The quickest fair option. Type in your managers and let a randomizer set the order from pick 1 to last. A good draft order generator uses true randomness and gives you a result the whole league can see. Draft Order Randomizer does this with a short pixel-art game instead of a plain list, and gives you a replay link as proof.

2. Run a weighted draft lottery

Many leagues reward last year's bottom teams with better odds, like the NBA draft lottery. Give each manager a number of ping-pong balls (more for worse finishes), then draw pick 1 from all the balls, pick 2 from what's left, and so on. Bad teams get better odds, never a guarantee. Every game on this site has a weighted lottery mode that shows each manager's odds before you start.

3. Reverse order of last season's standings

Common in keeper and dynasty leagues: the champion picks last and the last-place team picks first. It's simple and rewards rebuilding, but it can encourage tanking. A weighted lottery is a good middle ground.

4. Let managers choose their draft slot (Kentucky Derby style)

Instead of randomizing the draft order itself, randomize the order in which managers choose their slot. Some people want the turn at 12, others want pick 1. Every game here has a "Who chooses their draft slot first" option for exactly this.

5. Live draw on a video call

Names in a hat or numbered cards work if everyone is watching live. The weak spot is proof: whoever holds the hat controls the draw. Running a randomizer on a shared screen fixes that, and a replay link lets anyone who missed it watch later.

6. A head-to-head game or challenge

Some leagues settle it with a real-life contest like a cornhole tournament, mini golf or a video game bracket. It's fun, but tough when your league is spread across the country. A simulated game gives everyone the same experience no matter where they are.

7. Bid for draft slots with FAAB or auction dollars

Managers bid part of their free agent budget for the slot they want. It adds strategy, but needs a commissioner to run the auction and works best in experienced leagues.

8. Make it a show

The order matters most when everyone cares about how it was decided. Our games turn draft order day into an event: a fantasy football Oklahoma Drill, a hockey shootout, a home run derby and a game of Lightning, all with play-by-play trash talk, a box score and awards.

Questions

What is the fairest way to decide fantasy draft order?

A true random draw everyone can see, or a weighted lottery your league agreed on beforehand. The fairness comes from agreeing on the method first and sharing proof of the result.

How do I randomize a fantasy football draft order?

Use a draft order randomizer: enter your managers, run it once, and share the result. On this site, the result is a replay link anyone in the league can watch.

What is a fantasy draft lottery?

A weighted random draw where some managers get more chances (ping-pong balls) than others, usually the teams that finished worst last season. More chances means better odds, not a guaranteed pick.

What does KDS mean in fantasy football?

KDS stands for Kentucky Derby style. Managers are put in a random order, and then each one picks the draft slot they want, instead of being assigned one.
